The voyages of Christopher Columbus

Christopher Columbus was an Italian explorer who sailed for Spain. Between 1492 and 1504, he led four voyages across the Atlantic Ocean. His journeys connected Europe to the Americas and marked the beginning of sustained European exploration and colonisation of the region.

Columbus’s voyages were driven by:

  • Economic motives → finding new trade routes to Asia

  • Exploration and discovery

  • Religious motives → spreading Christianity

  • Royal support from Spain seeking wealth and power
